MuchBetter People: Steven Taggart, Commercial Operations Manager

The team at MuchBetter is made up of people with many talents and interests. Together we have over 100 years in the payments and gaming industries. We’re all very proud of the products we’re offering through MuchBetter and wanted to take an opportunity to introduce ourselves, and our favourite things about working together.

Hi Steven, tell us a bit about what do you do at MuchBetter?

My work with MuchBetter is focused primarily around onboarding merchants from sales all the way through to due diligence, contracts and integration and finally to Go-Live! Which sounds complicated but is really about getting more people onboard the good ship MuchBetter! It’s a great role because I meet the people who will ultimately benefit from MuchBetter’s unique approach to merchant operations. It keeps me very busy and I love it.

What did you do before you joined the MB team?

I’ve always worked in the finance industry but my journey to MuchBetter has been pretty varied. I spent many years working in Offshore Banking before I left to join PokerStars as a Product Manager. After 8 years working with them and getting to know everything about the world of gaming, I moved into Stock and Commodities trading. I was doing that for 3 years before I Joined MuchBetter as the Commercial Operations Manager with a whole new set of challenges. I bring a wide range of experience to MB and I find that helps communicate with merchants who also come from many different career routes.

Do you use the MuchBetter app in real life?

Absolutely, I’m a total convert! I use the fob mostly because I travel a lot so it’s brilliant in airports and on the move, when I try to limit the number of important things I have to keep in my pockets. It streamlines the payment process in bars and shops as well. I also do LOTS of integration live testing whenever there’s new features or upgrades.

What is the best thing about the app/service?

I’ve signed up all my friends so we can split bills or pay into group gifts or trips. And my family all have access to the same account so we know what our outgoings are at a glance. I particularly like the push notifications in-app that let you know what is being spent on the card or fob, it helps me keep an eye on the shopaholics in my house.

What is your typical day like at MuchBetter HQ?

This is my first role in a start-up so I’m often surprised by how untypical days can be. I have a calendar full of new projects and people to work with. Whether it’s a new merchant coming onboard, or another marketing campaign being rolled out, a new product initiative, or putting another merchant live – every day is a fresh case. In a start-up operation I think the most important thing is coordination, so the whole team need to be on the same page. So far we’ve managed to be very effective and maintain a Friday feeling throughout the week.

What are you most excited about with payment technology?

This is a whole new realm of technology. Being a live part of innovation, and watching the whole industry develop with each new feature. It’s like being part of the future. This must be how it felt to be working on the internet in the 90s, seeing how far we’ve come, and wondering how much further there is still to go. I’ve always loved technology and innovation, and finding better ways of doing things, and I believe MuchBetter is just that.

What’s your best tip/life hack for living well?

Work hard, play hard (take a break) and work hard again!
